The Rules Of Engagement

It's always nice to say hi and smile. It doesn't mean you have to smile at everyone, just the people you want to meet.
A smile shows a person is open to receiving conversation from you.

Pay a compliment. Most people are starved for a genuine nicety, such as "I like your shirt, what fabric is that?" would work.

If you want to make a great impression, focus on who you are and not what you do. It doesn't mean you should hide your two Master's degrees or an executive job, but it is to say that you are not solely what you do professionally, and you shouldn't make your occupation the focal point of the conversation unless you're at a networking event.

In The Playroom/Kid's Room:
  • Vacuum, dust and damp mop area regularly to wipe out dust bunnies that carry flame-retardant residue from electronic equipment, carpet backing, foam rubber and other furnishings.
  • Test paint surfaces for lead which has neurotoxins that can be released into the air when paint peels or chips. If you suspect toys of having lead paint, check recalls.gov site.
  • Disinfect doorknobs and toys which can be full of germs for 48 hours. Use handheld germ blaster for cleaning.
In Laundry/Pet Area:
  • Decant kibble into sealed containers.
  • Opt for paper or plant-based cat litter box. Those containing dust-creating silica maybe harmful to pets and people when inhaled.
  • Wash pet's bedding regularly with hot water. Take it to a laundry service if your wahser can't handle the bulk.
  • Make sure your clothes dryer vents outdoors to prevent moisture build up indoors which can create mildew.
  • Wash sheets, covers and bedspreads once a week in hot water to keep asthma-inducing dust mites under control.
In The Bedrooms:
  • Air out your bed before you make it each day, to allow mite-friendly moisture to evaporate. Airing out pillows and mattress also helps control mites.
  • Screen out pollen. Change or wahs the filte often, and keep windows closed.
  • Stop using moth balls. They contain possible carcinogens. Instead, store clean silks and wool in zip bags.
  • Avoid placing office equipment in the bedroom like copiers and printers which can generate lung irritants.

  • Schedule an HVAC check up to make sure furnaces, boilers and water heaters are properly venting carbon monoxide.
  • Clean or replace your furnace or forced-air system filter every 3 months.
  • If you have sump pump, check if working properly so mold-inducing moisture won't build up.
  • Check for flaking asbestos around pipes and boilers. Call an expert if you suspect it's present.

Hassle-Free Steps For A Healthier Home - (Part 1)

Let's face it, we can't avoid every hazard in life specially at home. As much as possible we try to prevent our home from bad bacteria, pollens, mold, virus, etc. for the sake of our love ones' health.
According to health and environmental experts, they suggest the following about tips on cleaning up our household.

On Entryways:
  • Keep pollen out by shaking/brushing outerwear. Also, keep a brush and wet wipes handy to clean pet's fur and feet. These are important during hay fever season. Don't hang laundry outdoor on clothes lines.
  • Add mats on both sides of the door. These can help catch allergens, bacteria or any lawn chemicals before they make themselves inside the home. ideal mats should be waterhog mats which can be hosed down.
  • Air out dry cleaning. Take off plastic bags on your dry cleaned stuff before you get it into home so that any residual perchloroethylene, -a common drying solvent and carcinogen used on dry cleaners can evaporate.
On Kitchen/Pantry:
  • Caulk holes and crevices to prevent disease-carrying rodents and insects for coming inside for a free lunch.
  • Filter drinking water. - Use activated carbon filters which can cut levels of lead, chlorine, and other contaminants. Use an at-home test kit for water safety to check it yourself.
  • Change fridge filters before they expire. - If your fridge comes with a water dispenser, change it every 6 months before sediment build up starts to overwhelm it.
  • Discard any cracked cutting boards. opt for ones made of maple or hard plastic so germs don't have a place to hide. Scrub cutting boards with hot, soapy water after each use.
  • Use your range-hood fan while cooking to help reduce cooking-related air pollutants which include nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide that lowers humidity, causing bacteria and mold to grow.
  • Dry plates and silverwares thoroughly to discourage bacterial growth and wash your hands before putting them away.
In The Living Room:
  • Don't allow smoking, to cut indoor air pollution.
  • Open windows (unless you're fighting pollen). Indoor air contain 2-5 times more chemical pollutants than air outdoors.
  • Use vacuum cleaner with hepa filter which is highly efficient in filtering up dust mites, animal dander and fleas.
  • Clean hardwood floors oten using a mild vinegar -and-water or lemon-oil-and-water solution. Avoid chemical-based cleansers and floor waxes that can be high in lung-irritating VOC's.
  • Disinfect handheld devices like phones, TV remotes and PC keyboards which can harbor bacteria than a toilet seat.
  • Hire a chimney sweep. Regular maintenance for fireplace and chimney helps lower airborne particulates and carbon-monoxide emissions. Before sweeping up, dampen ashes so that they won't fly around the room.
In The Bathroom:
  • Replace or repair failing caulks and cracked tiles to prevent mold.
  • Run your ceiling vent after every shower and make sure it runs at least 20 minutes to vent moist, mildew-attracting air outside.
  • Avoid using ammonia and chlorine cleansers and don't even mix them. They irritate the skin and lungs and even provoke asthma.
  • Disinfect faucets where germs and flu viruses collect fast. Wipe them with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution or try wipes with plant oils which kill germs and viruses.

Top 3 Signs Your Man Is Over and Out

Do you have difficulty figuring out when your relationship with your boyfriend is done? Better know these signs.

You don't have any idea about where he is: If a man loves you, he will tell you his whereabouts so you can rest assured he is where he says he is going to be. A man who keeps his locations secretly is probably doing something he knows you wouldn't want him to do, and he doesn't want to be found.

You're angry at him and he doesn't care: If he wants to be with you cares about your happiness. If he lets you stomp around the house so mad and he doesn't offer to do what it takes to get right with you, it's a wrap. There's no coming back from this.

He won;t go to counseling with you: No matter how much a guy hates the idea of airing the dirty laundry to a psychologist, the pastor or your mother, if he loves you, he'll do it. But if he refuses to talk it out or to get help, it means he's not interested in trying, - for the sake of his relationship with you.

Making The Most of Suburban Lawns

Learn how minute details with the right equipment can help create interest and make your yard unique.

First, start with a focal point such as a fountain, a pretty bird path, fire pit or slow-growing tree will detract from abrupt boundaries.

Go vertical. It will draw the eye upward by doing tall plantings or raised flower beds against your property's perimeter.

Build in curves by meandering pathways and curvi-linear flower beds which suggest a greater expanse. Use a string trimmer to keep them tidy.

A thick carpet of green will enhance any size yard. Consider organic fertilizers and natural care methods which will improve the soil, keep your lawn healthy and create a safe environment for your family and pets.

For a lawn that are less than half an acre, which are evenly cut, use a self-propelled walk-behind mower. For lawns more than half an acre, use a ride-on mower with a smaller cutting deck.

Places Where Diets Are Doomed

There are some tricky spots where you tend to go and gain weight. In this case, here are ways how you can come out still healthy.

The Mall:
Did you know that most of us can actually spend 13 stressful hours here during holidays? - one good reason to grab lots of bites to eat.

What You Can Do:
  • Don't snack. Have a meal instead. Say for example, eating Auntie Ann's pretzels has 370 calories in it, while taking in 2 slices of thin-crust pizza will fill you up for 384 calories.
  • Decide what you want ahead of time. So, enter the food court with a destination.
The Party Buffet:
What You Can Do:
  • Grab a snack beforehand, so you'll have 10 times the self-control.
  • Know you can stop. An extra calorie is always an extra calorie, so having eaten one cookie is no reason to eat 10 more.
  • Take a small plate of whatever you want, but wait 15 minutes before heading back to the buffet. Chances are you'll stop there.
Your Couch:
What You Can Do:
  • Eat your regular meal, instead of snacks. Control portions and you'll be satisfied without overeating.
  • Pick pizza over wings. Five chicken wings with blue cheese pack about 130 more calories and 3x the fat of a stuffed-crust pepperoni pizza slice.

You don't need to suffer strong smells from chemical cleaning agents such as strong scents of ammonia or bleach just to really say it's clean. Strong chemical cleaning agents smell can irritate your lungs and eyes.

Sprays & Bottles:
  1. Get a plant-derived glass cleaner; - a streak-free shine without airborne chemicals. (Ex. Senneth Generation Natural Glass & Surface Cleaner.)
  2. An all-natural degreaser concentrate which is made with grapefruit seed and orange peel extracts to remove soap scums and cooking messes. You can dilute it for a required job at hand. (Ex. Biokleen All Purpose Cleaner).
  3. Use an eco-safe surface protectant, a UV blocker made for car and boat exteriors to coat a dry toilet bowl at least twice a year so that gunk slides right off. It also zaps finger-prints on stainless steel. (Ex. 303 Aerospace Protectant)
  4. A beeswax furniture polish. Use it full strength twice a year to protect and condition both finished and unfinished wood. (Ex. Howard Naturals Wood Preserver).
  5. An enzyme-based disinfectant that is used for pet stain and odor remover to sanitize tile or vinyl flooring in kitchens and baths. It's also great for carpet and upholstery. (Ex. Nature's Miracle).
Tools:

Look Younger

Warming up your hair color surely helps. Ashy tones are the biggest enemy as you get older. If you don't want to hide your gray, try a few warm highlights around your face.
Blondes should go more golden; brunettes should try warm, caramel tones.
For gray coverage, use a permanent dye in warm color one or two shades lighter than your natural pregray shade.

Don't get stuck in no man's land. Hair with an awkward length without a descernible style is not flattering. An easy-to-style cropped cut, a bob that's chin length or longer hair with layers are highly recommended.

Style your hair so it frames your face if you have short hair. For longer hair, bangs are the way to go.

Go exfoliate your skin. Removing the top layer of dead skin cells reveals the younger-looking skin beneath.
Keep your hands gorgeous with creams that contain sunscreens and ingredients to improve texture.

Go to the pros. They have tons of ways to make you look younger and many are less expensive and less invasive than you might think.

Try prescription-strength retinoids that can boost collagen production and diminish wrinkles. it can also help fade the spots that appear as you grow older.

Use a light touch on make ups. The lesser you put, the better you look. Try a tinted moisturizer instead.

Stay away from too much powder as it can accentuate wrinkles. Cream eye shadow and blush formulas are more flattering on mature skin.

Stop wearing browns, - brighten up! A pop color takes years off. Pink for cheeks and lavender or olive-gold for eyes are highly recommended.

Strategies To Avoid Flu

Get the vaccine, the most vital step for protection. It's the best way to beat the virus.

People who are not getting enough sleep are more likely to come down with a cold than those who get sleep of 8 hours or more. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep.

Work your body out. Obesity lowers the immune response and you're more likely to get complications of the flu if you're overweight. A regular dose of exercise - about 30 minutes 5 days a week, keeps up the immune system's dukes to fight viruses.

Wash your hands often particularly after using public restrooms or in the gym. Lather up for about 20 seconds and don't miss the back of your hands, the wrists, between your fingers and under your nails. If you're in a high-risk environment, frequently wash hands and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Bolster your immune system by adding stress-reducing activities to your life. Your body's defense cells don't work well when you've got all these stress hormones.
Try bubble bath at the end of a long day or a few moments of meditation.

Easy Fixes

If your breast size is larger than the other and you want to buy a bra, buy the one that fits your larger breast. Just add an insert or filler on the other side if it's too lose.

If headbands usually give you headaches when you wear them, it's probably because you are using those ones that have wide plastic styles. Those styles made of a flexible substance like cardboard covered with fabric are usually more comfortable.

Labels that are "dry-clean only"; Wool and cashmere can be handwashed by using cold water and a mild detergent such as Woolite, then lay flat to dry. Same is with cotton and linen.
Only dry clean clothings that are made of several fabrics that has a very defined shape.

if your patent leather is smudged beyond recognition, buff it with a soft, dry cloth but in dire circumstances.

How To Maintain Your Deck Stain

Coating's longevity depends on good preparation and application.
Here's how you can put penetrating stains on your decks and siding.

Get to work on it right away if you see a spot of bare wood or notice fading. If you wait too long, you'll have to sand out the gray discoloration before you start.

Wet the wood after which apply a cleaner like Jomax, then let it sit for a few minutes. Scrub with a stiff-bristle brush to loosen the dirt. Hose off the debris. Don't use a pressure washer, which can gouge wood. Pull out any gunk between boards with a 5-in-1 tool. Work from bottom up on vertical surfaces.

Rough up the surface with a random-orbit or pole sander fitted with 60-grit paper when the wood is dry. Use leaf blower to blast off the dust.

Apply coating with a thick, 4-6 inch block stain brush, which can give better control than a sprayer. Work on only 2 or 3 boards or courses at a time and go from one end to the other to prevent lap marks. Always go back and brush the surface of spraying or rolling on the finish.

After 20 minutes, mop up any stain that hasn't penetrated. To avoid spontaneous combustion, put stain-soaked rags in a sealed can filled with water. Dispose of the container at a hazardous-waste center.

NOTE: If you're staining an elevated deck, cover everything underneath with plastic sheets to guard against drips.

What You Need To Know About Toenail Fungus

Fungus can turn your toenail into a thick, hard nail that cohabitates with bacteria that can feed off your skin.

You can get toenail fungus in most public areas such as on gymnasium floors, pools, at the beach or even at home without wearing any shoes.

If you notice any yellow, white or any general discolorations in your toenails, see your podiatrist. There are some over-the-counter ointment treatments for this, but your doctor will determine if you're really infected with fungus and whether oral medications or prescribed creams is needed.

It's possible to go on medication for months, but it can take a year for the infection to fully disappear. Once you've been infected with a fungus, you're more susceptible to getting it again, and more likely to get athlete's foot as well.

Prevent infections from coming back by keeping your nails clean, trimmed, and dry. Always wear shoes in public places and use antifungal powder.

What You Should Need to Know About Cancer

According to a recent survey by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, almost 2/3 of women believe that if no one in their family has cancer, they won't get it either. The truth is that most cancers occur in people with no family history of the disease.
There are things you can do to reduce your overall risk.

Don't smoke. it's the most important move you can make, and it slashes your chance of getting lung, throat and even cervical malignancies. 1/3 of cancer deaths are directly attributed to smoking.

Be aware of what you eat and get exercise. Adding more fruits and veggies plus whole grains to your diet and getting good exercise can reduce your risk for nearly all cancers, including breast cancer.

Be sure to get screened. Regular pap smears, periodic skin checks and annual mammograms after age 40 is a must.

Avoid These Health Scams And Hoaxes

Don't be scammed by these email rumors making the rounds.
  • "deodorant casues cancer." According to the American Cancer Society, there is no credible research to back those claims. Sets of emails have been forwarded containing messages that antiperspirants, underarm shaving and under wire bras cause breast cancer.

  • "tampons are toxic". some emails say that tampons contain asbestos to promote bleeding (so you'll buy more). Tampons don't contain asbestos, although they can lead to toxic shock syndrome if left in for too long, but this is rare; according to a study, there were fewer than 10 menstrual-related cases nationwide during the most recent year on record.

  • "carmex is addictive." - some urban legends emails say that lip balm contains drying ingredients - even ground glass that makes lips drier and turn people into Carmex junkies. FALSE!

  • "nutraSweet is nutra-sick." - alarming information asserts that Nutrasweet has caused an epidemic of lupus, multiple sclerosis and cancer. But according to the Food and Drug Administration, current research shows that Nutrasweet is safe except for people with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria, who can't metabolize it.

  • "rapists sterilize women." Some scary emails are claiming that rapists are using a drug called Progesterex to sterilize vicitims - so perpetrators can't be identified by paternity. The truth is: - there is no such drug! This hoax love to prey on female-specific fears, which actually distract you from other important health issues.

Trick of The Trade: Removing Sticky Stains

Your Materials:
A dull knife and canned air (the kind uses to clean your PC keyboard)

How you do it:
Hold the can 6 inches from the stain, spray for 4 seconds, and immediately and gently scrape off the now-frozen residue with the knife. It works! :).

Surprised!

We just got back home from our dinner at my in-laws house tonight. It was so touching for me that they decided to have a get together dinner for all of us before I leave for a 2-month vacation in the Philippines.

To my surprise, they gave me my early birthday presents! I was thinking we could celebrate it next year when I come back. But anyway, it was touching too. They said it was an early birthday celebration.

Thank you mom and George! I appreciate all your thoughtfulness and kindness to me...and hubby too! :).

Do You Itch Down There?

Most women at some point will experience vaginal yeast infection.
For women with diabetes, they are much more likely to get annoying and painful infections with the candida yeast, because candida feeds off glucose.

If you're not sure if you have a yeast infection, look for a white, cottage cheese-like discharge, itchiness and foul odor.
There are lots of over-the-counter medications for treating yeast infections but many medical experts recommend visiting your doctor instead of self-treating.

To prevent it, maintain good blood glucose control (for diabetics), skip scented soaps, avoid douches and keep vaginal area dry by wearing cotton underwear and avoiding tightly fitted pants.

Personalized Greetings

For me, it's still somewhat much better to receive thank you cards that are personalized. It's more or less the same as a handwritten note card when somebody is getting in touch with you rather than a plain email, don't you agree? The holidays are fast approaching, and personalized greeting cards would be up in the air during the peak season. It would be nice getting your greeting cards to get in touch with your loved ones which would be unique and stylish in designs as you can even customize them.

Sleep and Weight Loss

A certain study found out that weight loss can sometimes be an effective antidote to sleep apnea. People who have type 2 diabetes or are overweight (or both) are said to be prone to the sleep disorder, causing a person to struggle for air throughout the night and increases the risk for heart attack, stroke and death.

The usual treatment is continous positive airway pressure (CPAP) which forces air into the lungs through a mask during sleep, but some don't like it because they are uncomfortable and unwieldly.

The study had 264 obese people with type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea in either an intensive weight-loss program or a diabetes support group.
The weight-loss group was instructed to follow a strict diet and get 175 minutes of exercise per week like brisk walking.

After a year, the weight loss participants had lost an average of 24 pounds and sleep apnea disappeared in 14% of them, 3 times the rate of those in the support group, and whose sleep apnea worsened on average during the study.

The recall was done to a high possibility of defective Depuy Hip implant.

Getting A Better Check-Up

The face time you usually get with your doctor is already very limited. It might help to take the last appointment of the day, - doctors feel less time pressure then.

To stay on track while you're face to face with your doctor, bring a list of questions and take note about the four W's that doctors need to know:
  • when it began
  • what it feels like
  • what makes it better
  • what makes it worse
According to a study, doctors are usually disrupted by talking about themselves or telling stories which often result in subpar care. So, go ahead and direct the conversation back to you.

You can ask your doctor, - "Can I repeat the main points back to you?" then run down the info you need to remember. It may clear up any confusion - and hearing the details out loud helps remind your doctor of things she may have forgotten. This ensures that you're both in agreement about the next steps to take.

Your Skin Forecast

When temperatures become cooler, the moisture level in your skin also drops, disrupting its natural balance. This results to a flare-up on your face.

According to Doris Day, -dermatologist in NYC, pare down to a bare-bones skin-care regimen - a gentle cleanser and fragrance free moisturizer, and don't pick irritated areas.
Instead, calm the inflammation with an over-the-counter cortisone cream (like Cortizone-10).

Use extra moisturizer to soothe and rehydrate at night. Use the one that has hyaluronic acid which provides lots of moisture but won't clog pores.

Tricks For Whitening Underarm Stains

It's really annoying seeing yellowed white T-shirts on the underarm part, isn't it? No matter how you wash them more often, it wouldn't go away. And now, I know the trick; Here's how to do it.

First, you need one tablet of aspirin and a washing machine.

Put the discolored T-shirts in the machine and let the water start streaming in. (water temperature doesn't matter). Then, add detergent as usual. Drop in one aspirin when the basin is filled with water, close the machine cover, and let the cycle finish. White tees really do com out looking whiter than ever.

Vital Things You Should Know About Seasonal Flu & Flu Vaccine

It's flu season! But you can help prevent the spread of influenza. There are lots of things you can do to protect yourself and your family as well.
  • Get your flu shot.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you are sick, avoid contact with others.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, hanky or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water.
  • Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth.
Things You Need To Know About Flu Vaccine:
  • Anyone can get the flu.
  • Flu is caused by a virus that spreads from people who are flu-infected to the nose or throat of other people.
  • The flu shot doesn't contain live viruses and the nasal spray flu vaccine does contain weakened viruses; you cannot get the flu illness from either flu vaccine.
  • You can get the flu shot at the same time you get other vaccines.
  • You should get your flu shot every year. If you had the shot in the past years, you are not protected from the flu this year.
  • Healthy people ages 2-49 and who are not pregnant may get the nasal spray flu vaccine instead of the flu shot. All others including people with a medical condition that places them at high risk for complications from influenza should get the flu shot.

SSN's Lifting of Restrictions

Today, I went to the SSA district office in Westminster to update my status so they could change the work authorization on it. On my SS card it says "valid for DHS work authorization only".
So, in order to remove that, I have to update my status now being a US citizen :).

It was quite a breeze since the office there was not busy. They withheld my SSA card and they will be sending me a new one within 2 weeks time. I am assuming I can still receive it before leaving for Philippines.

Drink Pairs For a Classic Meal

Wash down that greasy goodness with an excellent pair of drinks.

If you're into wine:
Try it with New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, like the one from Martinborough Vineyard to epitomize the style.

If you're into beer:
It's more ideal to pair it with a wheat beer which has plenty of flavor but won't power because the dish is typically made with delicate fish.

If you're into cocktail:
Sparkling wines are great with light fish particularly if you mix a classic champagne cocktail by adding a little bitters and brown sugar.

Another Typhoon Coming to Philippines!

While I was watching news last night, I learned that there will be a strong typhoon set to attack Philippines, particularly the north Luzon area.
Although it relieves me a little bit to know my place is not that affected, it still concerns me about my family and our house there. (Iloilo)
The last time I talked to my sister in law, she said they are having brown outs most of the time, and now I hear some saying some places in Iloilo City area are already flooded?
We're more on the countryside though, so I'm sure we are still safe when it comes to flood. But not if it will be too windy, yikes!

Tips For Raising Healthy Kids

Snacks: Are your kids fond of snacks? Give them fruits like apple slices, berries and melons. Ice cream is good but not every day.

Veggies: Soups are great way to introduce a lot of veggies to kids. Consider stir-fries as well.

On Cleaning up: Cleanliness is very important. If you let kids make a total mess in the kitchen and then leave, you're not really teaching them anything.

On Learning To Cook: If kids can learn how to make a simple Bolognese sauce, they will never go hungry. It's easy to cook pasta, but a good sauce is way more useful.

Planning a Beach Wedding?

When you're thinking of getting married by the sea, timing is everything. The best time for the ceremony is late afternoon, about 90 minutes before sunset.
Beach goers that aren't part of your wedding will be mostly cleared out and sunset photos will be breathtaking.
If the ceremony is brief, it's probably best to let guests stand, - but provide chairs for older guests.

Wedding archways are nice, but think twice before putting one. A strong gusty wind could mean disaster.
Give your guests a heads up that the ceremony will be on the sand. You can probably put it on your invitation that suggests they wear flat shoes as well as bringing a light wrap if you anticipate chilly sea breezes.
You can opt to have a basket of inexpensive flip-flops on hand for guests to grab - or say everyone can go barefoot.

The Big Issues To Consider:
  • check local ordinances and be sure to file for permits. You don't want to discover last-minute that you're not allowed to be there.
  • Keep decor simple and well-secured. If the beach is very windy, skip the veil or wear a short one that won't end up in the groom's face (or yours).
  • Prepare for a stormy weather just in case: Have an indoor backup plan.
  • If mosquitoes or sand fleas are a problem, pay attention to timing. Critters are generally liveliest at dusk. Set out baskets of insect repellant for the guests.
  • Check tide charts to see if your location will be dry at the time of your ceremony.
  • Consider using battery-operated sound system with your iPod or laptop. String instruments don't mix with water and sand.
  • Visit your site in the season and time of day of your wedding to scout hurdles like frisbee tossers, temperature drops and aggressive gulls.

Fill Your grocery With Savings!

You can still serve and eat healthy meals to your family and save money at the same time.
Check your cabinets and grocery store ads each week. Combine foods you already have with sale or special items to plan a menu.
Pick nutritious food that are usually cheap which may include dried beans, sweet potatoes, brown rice and non-instant, whole grain oatmeal. Write down each meal and a grocery list of foods you need to complete them.

When you're at the store, stay at the outer edges near products like meat, dairy and bakery and in the frozen and canned sections. This way, you'll avoid being tempted by fancy displays or unhealthy, expensive processed foods.
Read labels carefully to be sure you get the lowest price per ounce. Consider store brands instead of brand names.

Buy fresh fruits and veggies near the time when they're grown. Check farmer markets if they aren't available at your grocery store. Only buy as much as you need, or try frozen fruits and veggies. They're just as healthy and often less expensive especially outside growing season.

A Cautious Advice

To all phentermine users, just a cautious advice on buying the right one. Avoid confusion between phentremine and phentermine. Phentremine is the over the counter imitator of the latter which also uses a "free trial offer" that makes more consumers attracted to it. Take note: - this imitator is even more expensive than phentermine, so be careful! Just a simple typo could mean a disaster to you and to your wallet. Check the spelling carefully before buying.

Root a Rose in Three Steps!

Rose lovers and gardeners, here are tips for you on how to root a rose.

First, take a cutting that is 6-8 inches long using sharp pruners. Cut at a 45-degree angle just below where the leaves join the stem. Remove lower leaves from the cutting. Place stem in water to prevent it from drying out.

Second, fill a small pot with moist potting soil. Pour a rooting powder such as Rootone in a small cup. Dip the cut end of each cutting in the powder. Tap the stem lightly to remove excess powder. Use a pencil to make a hole in the soil, stick cutting into hole, then tamp soil at stem.

Finally, keep your cuttings moist but not soggy. Cover with a clear plastic bag for 2-3 weeks to retain humidity while they root. Most will root in 6-10 weeks. Leave in pots for several months. Transplant rooted plants into well-prepared beds in full or nearly full sun.

Tips for Writing Wedding Thank-You Notes

Use a divide-and-conquer strategy. Each of you should plan to write your own notes to your respective families and friends.
Prompt and politeness are the key. Gifts received before your wedding should be acknowledged within 2 weeks; for those that come after, send notes within a month.
Thank the sender for the "generous gift" and mention your plans for it. Never mention the amount.
If an item arrives damaged, notify the store immediately; it can probably be replaced without involving the giver.
As with a cash gift, explain how you plan to use a present.
None of the following should replace a mailed paper note: a phone call, email, text, facebook status update or twitter.
Tell the giver that you're excited to see her at the wedding, or after the wedding, that you enjoyed spending time with her on your big day.
If a group of friends pitched in for a gift, write each person your own note, acknowledging how lucky you are to have them.
Send notes that match with your theme; send photos later.
Whoever writes the note should sign the note, but feel free to use language like "Josh and I adore the crepe pan."

Which Cut for What?

Breasts, boneless, skinless:
This cut is ideal for quick cooking. Don't overcook it to avoid getting the meat firm and dry. A boneless breast can be prepared in many ways; - stir fried, sauteed, poached, deep-fried, steamed, grilled or broiled, -the reason why it's a staple for every household.

Breasts, bone in, skin on:
This cut tends to be tastier than boneless breasts or cutlets because the skin and bones help retain moisture and flavor. Bone-in breasts are great pan-sauteed, oven-roasted, broiled, grilled or fried.

Legs: They have more meaty taste and firm texture, plus they retain their juicyness better than breasts do. They can handle long cooking techniques such as braising or roasting but also can be broiled or deep-fried. They are excellent when grilled, marinated.

Thighs: This can be prepared the same way with breasts, - but just allow more cooking time. Bone-in, skin-on thighs are perfect in slow simmer dishes such as chicken tangine, or chicken cacciatore.

Wings: Although they don't have a lot of meat, the meat is tender and juicy. They can be pan-fried, deep-fried or grilled. The crispy skin helps make them delicious when heavily seasoned-whether Buffalo, barbecue or teriyaki spices.

Getting Married? Know Your Officiants!

First things first, - ask the question; - religious or secular? (or "church or state?"). If you're going secular, choose a judge, justice of the peace or civil celebrant. Religious couples should start with their current houses of worship.

The church won't sanction marriage unless a Catholic priest gets permission to marry you outside of the church or chapel.

Consider interfaith weddings if your two religions have similar elements such as a Christian and a Jewish. In this case, you may want one ceremony with two officiants. If they're wildly different, - like Hindu marrying a Greek orthodox for instance, it makes more sense to plan two shorter, back-to-back services.

A ship's captain can't legally marry you except for Princess Cruise captains, who can perform weddings at sea in international waters.

In the US, in some states, you can have a friend obtain - usually from a county clerk, - the-one-time right to officiate. In others, he can be ordained through a ministry like the Universal Life Church or Universal Ministries.

For destination weddings, phone calls is the best option for searching for someone to officiate. Before planning on to have a face-to-face meeting, make a phone chat to check if your personalities and expectations mesh.

If you're highly considering a certain officiant, make sure to ask for references. Ask him to put you in touch with other couples he's married. This way, you can be alerted to any potential pitfalls.

Their fees vary. Some asks for donation to their house of worship; other have their rates and charge extra if they travel far.

You may consider inviting your officiant to your reception depending on how well you know him/her. It's always polite to give her invitation for the rehearsal dinner as well.

If you want a custom ceremony, some officiants will work with couples to write the entire service from scratch. They usually draft a basic outline, then ask the two of you to tweak it until everyone's satisfied with the result.

California Trip

Almost done with the packing and we are ending up with 2 big luggages for our trip. It's a 10-day trip plus most of hubby's teaching stuff is inside the other luggage. I hope eache doesn't exceed the 50 lbs. weight limit. I don't know how everything works with US Airways, but so far they charge luggage fees..yikes!
We'll leave very early tomorrow, another challenge for me to wake up so early (leaving at 4am)...and just imagine usually that's my sleeping time, lol!
Few more toiletries to complete the luggage before I finally close them :). Whew!

I voted!

Today, I exercised my right as a citizen of the US of A :). It was my first time to vote and it was done successfully and in a breeze :).

The primary election is scheduled on September 14, but since I wouldn't be around that day, I opted to vote early. They scheduled early voters to vote from September 3 - 9 (except Sunday), and it was a good thing they are open today which is a holiday (Labor Day).

The voting place isn't even crowded and it was I and my husband who was there that time. It's also much more convenient to vote early to avoid the crowd on the actual election day, so I and my husband were glad we did it today! :)

Back To School Deals!

Yes! Buy.com is offering great savings on back to school deals on netbooks. Students would love to grab the chance to avail this offer while it is still on sale. So, parents who have kids at home that constantly bug them for a laptop...perhaps, you may want to consider their pleas this time :). It's not a bad deal after all, plus many students nowadays need personal computers in school especially if they are in high schools or colleges.
Go check buy.com site, and avail their free shipping as well.

Geek Squad Visit!

So, the geek guy came home today to check our main PC downstairs which has been acting strange lately. It's actually hubby's work computer, so he said it's becoming too slow!

The geek guy said that it is running well, and the reason why it's slow is because it's running low on memory. He then recommended us to install a new one and he thought he could do it for us today, but he didn't have any extra at hand. So, he will just order one for us and he'll just come back couple weeks from now to install it.

It's a good thing to have 4 laptops running inside the house for back ups, LOL! So, hubby can still work temporarily in any of those ;).

Super Busy as Ever!

Of all my trips I had so far, this upcoming trip would be the longest. The preparations is also the toughest so far because I have to help my husband prepare his brochures and hand outs for his teaching. He will be teaching 5 classes in California couple of weeks from now, and he has 8 sets of handouts! I had to do the segregating, grouping, stapling, organizing, and arranging.
This was just another long extra hours that I did (thank God, it's all done and packed in boxes).
I still have to go back and focus on the packing, and this time, I am packing with 2 big luggages! Agh! Can you imagine, just one luggage would be for hubby's teaching materials. Oh well!

I got 8 days to go before our departure. Whew!

Beehives In Our Car

We have a car that has been parked and not being used for many months now and is only on our drive way. Then, I noticed there are several bees flying around it. They would come in groups so I tried to trace where the group of them were going.
Gosh, I saw them just behind the front door of our car, and they had a beehive there! Then I went around to check on the other door, and there was also another one there. Take a look at the photos!
I told my hubby to call the pest control, but he said it can be done with Raid, LOL!

So we bought one, and he sprayed all of it on the bees and knocked their beehives. We have to be aware of those worker bees (as they call it), because they can give a painful sting! They aren't killer bees though, but they still bite. Anyway, I guess we made them all dead with the insecticide. I don't see them around anymore, whew!

My Pillow Pets!

It's a pillow...it's a pet, it's a pillow pet! That was what the song was, LOL!

I got these few weeks ago. My husband saw it first on TV and then he thought of getting it online. It was cute when he showed it to me one time it was flashed on the TV screen several times. We got two, one is a dalmatian doggie and the other is a leopard.

They are convertible pillow - stuff toy thingy, and usually enjoyed by kids...but hey! adults are not exempted. We need to be child-like at times, don't you think?

So, there they go. I am using the dalmatian as my pillow, and the leopard is just displayed on the couch. Hubby hugs it from time to time but he can't use it as his pillow because he has his own special pillow ;).

They are super nicey :).

I'm now a Dual Citizen :)

Thank God that finally I was able to take my oath to re-aquire my Filipino citizenship last Wednesday (Aug. 25) at the Philippine Consulate in DC.
I had to re apply for a new passport as well since my Phil. passport that I recently renewed was considered invalid because it was issued to me before I became a US citizen. It was like a waste of 50 buck for that, but I wouldn't mind. As long as I can get my new one too soon for my upcoming trip in November. So, the waiting has started!

Oral Contraceptives & Pregnancy

Here's something to watch out. Oral contraceptives can be less effective in women who are overweight which put them at risk for unplanned pregnancies.
The research says that blood concentration hormones measured from a birth control pill in 20 women ages 18-35 found out that the pill took twice as long to achieve maximum concentration in an obese group as it did in normal - weight women.

Be a Better Parent

Let's face it. Most moms sometimes wish their kids would just disappear, - temporarily, just so you can read that paper in peace.
Mothers on the other hand still mostly believe that they should constantly engage with their kids but this mentality can leave no time for relaxation, - and creates stress that can possibly picked up by the kids. The fact is training your kids to play on their own is a best idea to do. This leads them to be creative, confident and develop critical thinking.

The first step to teach your kid to be okay to play alone is showing them how fun it can be. This process usually begins before he can crawl. Place your child on a crib or play pen with a few toys while you do your stuff. Rattles, stacking rings, or any easy-to-grasp objects can keep a 6-month old baby busy for 20 minutes.

Make a secure, baby-proofed play areas in your home and yard that encourage experimentation. Open-ended toys such as building blocks, Legos, crayons, costumes, etc...stretch your kids creativity to keep them occupied much longer.

Keep them engaged. You can keep them busy with little projects like lying on the blanket doodling the shape of the clouds, or give science experiments, arts and crafts. Encouraging your kid to develop passions makes him better equipped to handle life's challenges.

Most kids love little more than a big mess, and make them get occupied for hours. Making a mess encourages kids to experiment and learn, so, tornado-like clutter may be rough for most, but they're worth the clean up.
Carving out time for yourself isn't really about being organized; it's about relinquishing control now and then - and allowing your kids to do what they do best: - play!

A Hidden Danger?

It's surprising that when it comes to food, "raw" doesn't necessarily mean "unprocessed". There are fresh meat that may contain phosphorus or potassium which is added by processors to improve flavor or increase shell life. This can be potentially dangerous threat to people who have kidney ailments who need to limit their intake of these substances.
According to a recent study, they found out that 2-3x as much potassium or phosphorus in raw, processed meats as in similar cuts of unprocessed meats.
If you're strictly watching your potassium or phosphorus, look for meats labeled "additive-free."

What's On Your Baby's Mind?

Actually, this is one of the most common question a mom asks as she stares into her baby's big eyes! "What the heck is he thinking about?" Did you know that your baby's brain is working harder than you ever imagined?
According to a recent study, it discovered that babies and toddlers know more, learn more and experience even more than adults!

Here are some fascinating facts according to Gopnik, a Ph.D and author of "The Philosophical Baby."

Baby's got your number early on. New studies show that babies minds start to figure out how other people's mind work by 7 months. So when your baby see you reach an object, he gets that you want to grab it.

Your toddler knows there isn't really a polar bear living in her pocket. 70% of kids have imaginary playmates...their way of making sense of the world. Starting at 3-4 years old, kids understand that their pretend playmates aren't real.

Children need answers like plants need water. If your child constantly asks "why, why, why?" she's not trying to annoy you. Kids are driven to find out as much as they can about the world. So, be patient, give answers and brace yourself for that time when you'll be aching for your teen to seek you out!

Plan a Memphis Trip and Enter to Win a Trip!

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Memphis Travel. All opinions are 100% mine.

I love traveling. I have been to at least 33 states in the US, and every state I had been to is absolutely awesome. I have been wishing to visit the 50 states to complete my goal, and I hope time will come for that :).
I haven't been to Tennessee yet, and the site is surely helping me a lot in the trip planning. It's such an ideal place to make a trip itinerary, indeed! In due time, Memphis will be one of my target area for a future trip.
I love the Memphis-savvy travel guide. This is so cool as a trip planner. Well, I love to go outdoors and usually I pick this type of activity in the summer. I love visiting parks and gardens for photo shoots and some indoor and outdoor adventures as well. If I get the chance to do the Memphis trip, I would also love to do the couple's trip for two nights since both I and my husband always travel together :).

And to complete the fun...there should always be food along somewhere, LOL! I love food as much as I enjoy travel. YoLo is the perfect place to hang on to particularly in summer. And why not? We both love frozen yogurts with my husband! Well, ice cream, frosty, frozen yogurts in any forms are always perfect for summer, don't you think?
Gosh! I wanted so very much to join to enter to win a trip package! Our schedule is full for summer until the end of this year.
Anyway, this is worth recommending for my readers out there who would like to go and play around in Memphis! :). I'm sure it should be worth the fun. I should have found this earlier...(sigh).

Hubby's Birthday!

It's my beloved's birthday today. The gifts I ordered early last week arrived just in time before his birthday, so I had the chance to wrap them :).
Nothing big for the celebration. We will be having our dinner together at our mom-mom's house, so I'm glad I don't have to cook dinner today, lol!

Not feeling Well

I still am not feeling good til today. Then, my hubby went home earlier today and he wasn't feeling well too. I am not sure if this is from our trip where we really were tired roaming the park for 2 days under the scorching heat and too much crowd at the park, but I am guessing it's one of the reasons. Hubby said he has a bad stomach since Monday. God, we're praying for healing. It's hard if both of us would get sick. I would just be willing to get sick but not for hubby. It worries me seeing him on bed weak :(.
