Big Renovation

Guest written by our friend Gladys Fuentes

My husband and I are renovating our dream home right now. We have waited years to do this, and we can’t wait to see the results. We could never see ourselves living in a gated community where all of the houses looked exactly the same. We decided that we would have to buy in an old, historical neighborhood and just change the house to meet our needs. I’ve always wanted an amazing kitchen, and that will probably be the most extravagant part of the house. I get so excited when I think about all of the amazing meals I’ll be able to make for my family in that kitchen one day. We aren’t able to live there during the renovation, so we were really worried that someone would break in and steal all of the expensive appliances we were having installed. The contractor suggested we go to www.homesecurity101.com and set up a home security system to protect the home while no one is living there. We feel much better knowing that our property is safe now and can’t wait to move in when the house is ready. Hopefully all this hard work and waiting around will be worth it.

The Germiest Places You Could Imagine!

If you think the dirtiest place you'll ever encounter is a public toilet, think again! According to a study, 80% of grocery carts were found out they had E.coli!...and they're not the only microbe magnets.
Here are the other list of at least top 5 most germ-filled places in your world!...and the best way to clean them.

1. Phones - did you know that your cell phone can carry 500 times more bacteria than a toilet seat? Many disease causing microbes can survive for 2 weeks on your rarely cleaned office or phone. Swipe with a disinfecting wipe daily.

2. Soap dispensers - they are also common as hot spots for E.coli, and other fecal bacteria, but if you wash your hands properly, lathering while singing one round of "happy birhtday", you'll get rid of the bugs.

3. Keyboards and Mouse - your co worker's germs can linger on your computer longer than the virus she accidentally emailed last week. The rhinovirus that causes common cold can survive for hours to days on keyboards. Wipe these accessories weekly with disinfectant even if you're the only one using your computer.

4. Lobby-level elevator buttons - Wait for someone else to press the button, or use your knuckle, then apply sanitizer.

Shopping cart handles - Up to 8 in 10 may have the presence of E.coli, so take advantage of free disinfectant wipes at the store or use hand sanitizer after shopping.

Is Your RV Covered?

Do you have RV? I bet for those who really love to travel or for those that have jobs that are always on the road through RV, for sure, they have their insurance for it.
It is considered important that your RV is covered particularly if you use it most of the time. Besides, you never knows what happens on the road every minute you are on it, don't you think?
How would you imagine yourself stuck in the middle of nowhere when it happens that your RV breaks down? Sucks!...and dangerous too!
So be sure you have RV warranty that also includes rv repair. Perhaps, you might want to consider checking Good Sam extended service plan. It doesn't hurt to check on it and get in touch with them, especially if your RV has no warranties or insurance coverage.

How Often Would You Wash/Clean Your Stuff At Home?

In swapping your bath towel for a fresh one, ideal days should be 2-3 days, and always hang them up dry to prevent the growth of bacteria. Wash them in hot water.

In washing your sheets and pillow cases, it is ideal to do it once a week in hot water, then dry on the hottest setting. Wash pillows every 6 months and your comforter every 2 months.

How often should you replace your toothbrush?...get a new one monthly (plus anytime you've been sick). Rinse your toothbrush under the hottest water possible after use and stand up to dry to keep germs away.

Replace your sponges once a month and scrub brushes every 3-6 months.

Winter Footwears I Wish I Could Have! :)

Okay, so this winter, I had discovered I now own 10 pairs of boots! I have been eyeing some online deals on ugg boots, but I have to face it, I need to be financially considerate this year. I still have couple pairs I haven't used out of my boots collection, so I guess, I just have to hang on getting a pair from UGG. I already checked some local stores on UGG boots, but I felt the price was too expensive and that the styles are not my type. I saw those styles and sizes I want online with fine deals, but I need to wait until next year.

Cleaning Your Home Without Harmful Chemicals

For families having cases of severe allergies and asthma, cleaning the house using commercial cleaning products containing ammonia and other chemicals can trigger those illnesses especially young children, many of which are often paying more just to buy chemical-free cleaning products.

But you can make your own asthma-friendly cleaning formulas at home with your own little effort, by using common household ingredients such as baking soda and vinegar.

Here are some helpful easy-to-make recipes that are effective and safe for you and your family to use:

For cleaning windows and mirrors:
Mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar with 2 quarts of warm water, then apply it with a clean sponge. Wipe off any excess with a dry rag or paper towel.

For Oven Cleaner:
Mix 1 cup of baking soda with enough water to make a paste. Then apply it to dirty oven surfaces and let stand. After a few minutes scrub it using a scouring pad. This method requires a little more elbow grease but is not toxic.

For Woodworks, Tiles and Linoleums:
To treat some spots on them, Murphy's liquid soap is good and safe all-purpose cleaner.

For Toilet Bowl Cleaner:
Sprinkle baking soda around the inside of the toilet bowl, then add a couple drops of liquid soap. Scrub with a brush and finish outside surface with a rag sprinkled with baking soda.

For Laundry:
Use "non-chlorine bleach" for lifting stains from clothing, or try soaking fabrics in water mixed with borax, hydrogen peroxide, lemon juice, baking soda or white vinegar.

For Linoleum Floor Cleaner:
Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar in a bucket of warm water. The smell will disappear when the floor dries.

Check Those "Green" Grocery Bags

Nowadays, reusable bags have become a must for eco-friendly shopping. But did you know that those pretty totes can get pretty gross too if you don't check it out.

A research study from the University of Arizona in Tucson found out that more than half of those reusable grocery bags they tested were contaminated by fecal bacteria and E. Coli that cause severe stomach upset if ingested. So, also take note that totes stored in a warm car trunk can even make those germs multiply faster.

Stay safe by designating different bags for produce and meat and another one for groceries only.
Don't mix and use all the same bags to carry your clothes, shoes or toys that can carry more bacteria to your food.

Be sure to to those those totes in with the laundry once in a while then cycle it on hot to kill 99.9% bacteria.

Do Your Kids Have High Cholesterol?

You certainly are sure that monitoring your cholesterol is very important, but your kids might need their checks too.
According to a certain study from West Virginia University in Morgantown, they found out that one third out of 20,000 fifth graders had high levels of blood fats.

Currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends these test for kids who have a very strong family history of premature heart disease.
But until then, talk to your doctor about blood tests. Many parents might not consider cholesterol as a serious issue for kids but evidences show that most adult heart diseases start in childhood.

The good news is that kids can be protected by early intervention with diet and exercise.

Creating a Mess-Free Closet

Don't know how to slim down your possessions and expand your options? Perhaps, the following tips can help. It's time to clean up your closet!

Anything you haven't worn for two years or more, garments that can't be repaired, fashion mistake, etc...need to be out for disposal.
It feels good to give stuff away that you don't use.

Clothes can be moved to a standing rack, or bins and boxes under the bed or stacked properly in a corner for out of season clothes. Another option is folding them, mostly ideal for wrinkled style clothes, or clothes that need not to be ironed.

Get double cascading hooks that let you hang multiple items from one hanger. Make use of the wall above the hanging rod by adding an additional shelf for off-season storage.
You can also install mini-shelves or under-wire baskets for any vertical space between existing shelves.

Use the back of the door by hanging an over-the-door-rack or hooks to neatly hang your small items such as bags, hats or belts.

Good luck! :)
