What You Need To Know About Toenail Fungus

Fungus can turn your toenail into a thick, hard nail that cohabitates with bacteria that can feed off your skin.

You can get toenail fungus in most public areas such as on gymnasium floors, pools, at the beach or even at home without wearing any shoes.

If you notice any yellow, white or any general discolorations in your toenails, see your podiatrist. There are some over-the-counter ointment treatments for this, but your doctor will determine if you're really infected with fungus and whether oral medications or prescribed creams is needed.

It's possible to go on medication for months, but it can take a year for the infection to fully disappear. Once you've been infected with a fungus, you're more susceptible to getting it again, and more likely to get athlete's foot as well.

Prevent infections from coming back by keeping your nails clean, trimmed, and dry. Always wear shoes in public places and use antifungal powder.
