Tricks To Sharpen Your Shovel
With less effort, try cut through sod and roots by keeping on digging tools like your spade shovel sharp.
You can first clamp the shovel to a workbench making the concave side of the blade faces up. Use heavy gloves and holding a mill bastard file, push it upward along the edge of the blade. Lift and repeat.
Then follow the original bevel; if it has worn off, tilt the file at a 45-degree angle from the shovel's face. After the blade has been sharpened, flip the shovel over and make a few passes with the file to remove the resulting burr on the underside.
